چکیده

In this paper we introduce an empirical study of multimodal cues of turn-taking dynamics in a social interaction context. We first identify pauses, gaps and overlapped speech segments in the dyadic conversation dataset. Second, we define two types of measurements, Mean Equalized Energy (MEE) and Animation Level (AL) on the audio and video channels, respectively. Then, we verify the hypothesis that the speaker with higher MEE or AL is more likely to take the floor after silence or overlapped speech. The results suggest that both the vocal and visual movement energy offer useful cues towards inferring the intention of the interlocutor to grab the floor.

Cross-Linguistic Study of the Production of Turn-Taking Cues in American English and Argentine Spanish

We present the results of a series of machine learning experiments aimed at exploring the differences and similarities in the production of turn-taking cues in American English and Argentine Spanish. An analysis of prosodic features automatically extracted from 21 dyadic conversations (12 En, 9 Sp) revealed that, when signaling Holds, speakers of both languages tend to use roughly the same comb...

Acoustic-prosodic, turn-taking, and language cues in child-psychologist interactions for varying social demand

Impaired social communication and social reciprocity are the primary phenotypic distinctions between autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other developmental disorders. We investigate quantitative conversational cues in child-psychologist interactions using acoustic-prosodic, turn-taking, and language features. Results indicate the conversational quality degraded for children with higher ASD sev...

An empirical analysis of user uncertainty in problem-solving child-machine interactions

With the widespread use of technologies directed towards children, child-machine interactions have become a topic of great interest. Computers must interpret relevant contextual user cues in order to provide a more natural interactive environment. Our focus in this paper is analyzing audio-visual user uncertainty cues using spontaneous conversations between a child and computer in a problem-sol...

Speaking and Listening with the Eyes: Gaze Signaling during Dyadic Interactions

Cognitive scientists have long been interested in the role that eye gaze plays in social interactions. Previous research suggests that gaze acts as a signaling mechanism and can be used to control turn-taking behaviour. However, early research on this topic employed methods of analysis that aggregated gaze information across an entire trial (or trials), which masks any temporal dynamics that ma...

Complexity matching in dyadic conversation.

Recent studies of dyadic interaction have examined phenomena of synchronization, entrainment, alignment, and convergence. All these forms of behavioral matching have been hypothesized to play a supportive role in establishing coordination and common ground between interlocutors. In the present study, evidence is found for a new kind of coordination termed complexity matching. Temporal dynamics ...
